    Course Description

American institutions of higher education, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, impose significant intellectual demands on students and have a number of expectations about how students approach their education, their coursework, and their in-class behavior and engagement. These demands and expectations are different from those at institutions in most other countries and can be difficult for unprepared students to adapt to. Moreover, these demands and expectations are often unstated, and professors and administrators at US universities expect students to be already familiar with them and ready to tackle their coursework without any further guidance. International students, who typically do not know about and have not previously encountered US-style academic demands, often struggle and find themselves in academic peril.

What You Will Gain from This Course

Throughout this course, students will gain vital experience with US-style classroom learning, and will have the opportunity to engage with university-level materials and topics in English and adapt themselves to the challenges of this type of work. The course will cover topics of interest to the students, and students will be expected to master the course content as they would in a for-credit university course. In so doing, the students will use the combination of course materials, discussions, and assignments as an integrative platform for acclimating and adapting to the demands of US higher education. In the process, students will also improve their English skills and build relevant vocabulary.

    Course Goal

The primary goal of this class is to prepare students for university and professional success, including:

    1. Understanding a wide range of university-level academic and career-related discourse by recalling, organizing, and analyzing facts and details
    2. Communicating on a variety of discourses clearly and concisely with peers and educators (e.g. opinion, research, and analysis)
    3. Expanding writing skills to include a range of styles, forms, and lengths that may be used in a variety of academic disciplines and professional situations
    4. Enhancing critical thinking skills through analysis and evaluation of university-level subject matter.
